Afterbirth pains in dogs refer to the contractions and discomfort experienced by the mother dog after giving birth. These pains are caused by the uterus contracting back to its normal size and expelling any remaining placental tissue. Afterbirth pains are a natural part of the postpartum period and are typically mild to moderate in intensity. It is important to monitor the mother dog for any signs of excessive pain or distress, as this may indicate a complication that requires veterinary attention. **

Cats typically do not eat the afterbirth because it is instinctual for them to clean the area and remove any potential mess or scent that could attract predators. Additionally, the afterbirth contains blood and other bodily fluids that may not be appealing to the cat. In the wild, eating the afterbirth could also attract scavengers, so it is safer for the cat to leave it untouched. **

Yes, after the baby is born, the placenta (afterbirth) is typically delivered shortly afterward. This process is known as the third stage of labor.
